Bathroom Decorating Guide

By: Rich Bendall

A well designed bathroom can add a lot of value to your home.  When redecorating your bathroom there a number of things you should consider.

All bathroom decorating projects should begin with careful planning.  Having everything planned out at an early stage will reduce the chances of problems occurring later on.  Since the bathroom tends to be one of the smallest rooms in the home you may need to make decisions on what items of furniture it is most important to have.  For example, if there is not room for both a shower and a bath it may be necessary to choose between them or consider a combination shower bath.  The layout of the plumbing can also be a factor in where you place certain items of furniture.

Typically when decorating a bathroom it is best to choose a colour scheme made up of light, natural colours.  Buying a bathroom suite rather than separate items of furniture can be a good way of making sure you have furniture that fits into your chosen colour scheme.

As a way of saving money you should consider doing some DIY.  Clearly there are some jobs, such as those involving plumbing, where it is wise to employ an experienced professional to do the work for you.  However tiling, installing fittings such as hooks and towel rails and other small jobs can easily be performed by you.

If space in your bathroom is limited then choosing the right type of furniture and fittings can make a big difference.  Choosing a fitted bath rather than a freestanding one will take up much less floor space and make your bathroom appear less cluttered.  Similarly a corner basin can have the same effect.

Finally in bathroom design it is the finishing touches that can make a huge difference to the overall appearance of the room.  Using accessories such as soap dishes, mirrors and towel heaters can be just what you need to complete your ideal bathroom.
